Visual Communication

Visual Communication is about meeting the world and communicating with it. We are curious about everything and refuse to be limited by temporary trends and trivial whims of fashion. You will learn how to develop ideas, do research, and analyze your way to your own personal style. Your curiosity will be challenged and you will be equipped with lots of useful tools to transform your thoughts into visual expressions; from print and design to digital media, photos, and live images.

Introduction

Visual Communication is a formidable mixture of graphic design, interaction design, and illustration. At DSDH you will learn how to develop ideas, to do research, and to analyze. Your abundance of ideas is bound to be put in the spot, and you will be equipped with tools to transform your ideas into visual expression. Through research and careful analysis we will delve into various issues, and you will learn how to mediate messages and stories visually.
You will expand your knowledge about typography, layout, composition, shape, and color. Some of our projects come to life by hand, and you will get an introduction to analoguetechniques such as drawing, woodcut, and linoleum print.
We create original posters, packaging, books, pictograms, logos, photos, serigraphy, and projects of a more conceptual character where the choice of form is free and the atmosphere is open-minded and unrestricted. Most of our projects come to life in our well-furbished Mac workshop. This is where you receive concentrated lessons and learn to use Adobe programs: Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign – everything you are going to need if you are considering applying to one of the design-relatededucations in Denmark. We strive to propose assignments that will challenge you regardless of your initial qualifications when you begin at DSDH. And by the time you leave us you will have learned how to make presentation material that stands out, so that your portfolio sparkles and will strike up interest.

Teaching method

At Visual Communication you will get your own permanent workspace, where you can delve into the projects, exhibit your work process, and collect materials to inspire you. We have two rooms available – one large and well furbished room full of Mac computers and one inspiring and cozy workshop where you can work with analog techniques and expressions. Most projects begin with in-depth research and development of ideas. You will have plenty of chances to make use of your curiosity and reinforce your ability to let your thoughts loose. You will receive lotsof guidance from your teachers – the regular teachers as well as the guest lecturers who frequently stop by the school to host prolific and instructive workshops. The other students at Visual Communication will also inspire you, and you will take part in an energetic everyday life full of discussions, which will motivate you to evolve professionally and personally and which will refine your sense of what good visual communication looks like.

You will get to work with the Adobe programs: Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop. Naturally, you will get a thorough introduction to the various programs and learn how to master them while solving tasks. Occasionally, we include the historical perspective of design – we take a look at the development of design throughouttime and focus on what’s going on in the field in the present.

Visual Communication has not only to do with layout carried out on screen. It is also about exploring new and old techniques and materials. Be prepared for a flexible bedtime schedule. We are not sticklers for regular working hours; we let our zeal take charge of the game, and most days the computers are buzzing andthere is coffee brewing and music playing in the workshop until long after dark.

We end all projects with a group review where you share your thoughts and the choices you have made during your work process with the rest of the class.

Electives

For 3 weeks of every semester you can choose between various subjects that will complement your professional design process and develop your creative potential. The range of electives change from semester to semester – it could be topics such as photo, painting, ceramics, choir song, animation, parkour, creative writing, illustration, rhythmical ensemble, or lessons in useful computer programs that we don’t have to time to get into during the busy everyday life at the main study programs.

Mentoring

At The Scandinavian Design College we have a FFD-trained mentor. The concept of Mentor Support is an offer for young students aging from 17,5 to 25 years who need extra clarification and stimulating support in order to start a competent youth education. In every case of mentoring programs there will be individually adjusted guidance focused on the the main needs. The first step for the student is to work out a plan of study including mentor support in cooperation with an UU-instructor/guide. UU-plan must be sent to design college before start.
